Does my balance expire if I stop using it?
No. Credit you deposit stays on your account until you spend it. There is nothing to renew, nothing that lapses at the end of a month, and no fee for leaving a balance sitting there.
What happens when my balance runs out?
Requests stop, and nothing else. The API answers with a plain 402 and the message that your balance is insufficient for the request — no overdraft, no surprise charge, no account in arrears. Top up and the same key keeps working.
How exactly am I charged for a request?
Per token, at the DA rate published for the model you called, drawn from your balance the moment the request finishes. The exact charge appears in your dashboard down to the centime, so the price you read before the call is the price you pay after it.
